Obvious irony in the idea of joining a “church” in order to think for yourself. Reminds me of Pirsig’s problem with the “church of reason”.

As far as I know, during long years of reformation, civil war and restoration England had seen very intricate relations between many churches and many freedoms, including freedom of thought.
Very true, but the simply irony of needing to join a church to so so is real, even more so given the particular church here.
